2010 THEME: GOD’S PLAN FOR SHARING (GPS)

GPS is a 10 year evangelistic initiative to share the gospel with every person in America. This is a God-sized goal requiring Every Believer Sharing, Every Person Hearing by 2020. With lostness constantly on the rise in Spartanburg as more people move here and less attending any evangelical church, my prayer is that your church will commit to taking GPS Across North America, beginning in 2010 and continuing into 2020 and beyond for the Kingdom.

If we are to successfully fulfill the Great Commission, we must not assume that the people around us know God and the love He has for us. We must share the gospel in every possible way, beginning with the following ways:

PRAYING, ENGAGING, CONNECTING, CELEBRATING AND DISCIPLE MAKING

While we have never before been where we are going, God has promised never to lead us where His Grace will not protect us. In Proverbs 3:5-6 we are reminded to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not upon your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” Psalm 37:4 also reminds us to “Delight yourself in the Lord and the desires of your heart will be yours.”

Following GOD’S PLAN for SHARING is a three-fold process. It starts with knowing you are saved according:

First: Romans 10:9  teaches that we must confess

Second: Titus 1:1 and 2:11-14 teaches we must learn how we are to live. Third: 2 Cor. 9:6-9 & 1 Tim. 6:17-19 =We must recognize all we have belongs to God. We are His stewards given His blessings for His glory.

God wants to expand your territory through your sharing. Will you answer the call and endeavor to follow GOD’S PLAN FOR SHARING in 2010.

May ‘GPS lead you to take action in 2010 that will change lives for eternity.

YOUR “GPS” JOURNEY BEGINS NOW-PRAYERWALKING

GPS is a 10 year evangelistic initiative to share the gospel with every person in America. This is a God-sized goal requiring Every Believer Sharing, Every Person Hearing by 2020. My prayer is that your church will commit to taking GPS Across North America, beginning in 2010 and continuing into 2020.

The SC model is slightly different than the NAMB model of participation in that it adds one additional component (5), which is outlined for you below:

Step One: Praying (January)=Prayerwalking your communities (Before you talk to men about God, be sure to talk to God about men.)

Step Two: Engaging (February)= Cultivate the soil of believers and non-believers by using Prayer Cards, Equipping yourself with “A Story To Tell” or some other evangelism training tool & building relationships with the lost.

Step Three: Connecting (March)=Start by Sowing. Share your testimony and present the gospel. Then invite new believers to an evangelistic service at Easter.

Step Four: Celebrating (April)=Rejoice in the Harvest. Accompany new believers through the process of believer’s baptism on Easter Sunday.

Step Five: Disciple Making (April-May)=Conserve the Seed. Teach them how to walk and grow in the Lord over at least the next 5 weeks during the follow up phase. This is a vital part of the salvation experience.

If your church is interested in GPS 2010, call Paul at the Network. We can also

offer assistance in mapping your area for Prayer walking if you’d like help.

OPERATION WARM UP

Every year right here in Spartanburg County, hundreds of people living on the street and in other trying situations struggle to resist the winter weather. January and February are notoriously our coldest months of the year.

This year, we’re asking you to help give the gift of warmth in several ways:

1.   Pray for the Homeless and needy: Every time you put on a pair of socks, a pair of gloves, a hat, a coat or do anything to keep yourself warm like turning on the heat in your home or car, stop & think about the hundreds of people who may not have such luxuries. Ask God to use you to meet this need.

2.    Lend a Helping Hand: At least once in January volunteers to help at a Soup Kitchen, Food and/or Clothing Pantry or serve someone on the streets a cup of hot chocolate or coffee. Don’t forget to pray for them right there also.

3.   Give of Your Bounty: Each week during the month of January, makes plans to sacrifice eating out and brown bag your lunch for one day. Take that lunch money and buy a pair of socks, a pair of gloves or a hat for someone cold and in need of some warmth and love.

What greater way to show someone the gospel in action than to help meet a need they cannot meet for themselves. *Please bring all donations to the Network to be distributed to agencies also helping meet these needs.

SERVANT EVANGELISM 6 IN 1 CHALLENGE

This year, I wanted to present a challenge to each of our churches in the area of servant evangelism. In a day and time when as many as 85% of churches across America are plateaued or declining, the truth still remains that “Money follows Missions” and “Missions produces Disciples,” which equates to “Church Growth, ” both spiritually and numerically. Let me encourage you now to begin prioritizing for 2010 and see where GPS leads you.

The challenge for each church is to strive to become a Platinum level or Gold Level Church. What must a church do in order to achieve one of these titles? The following is a list of requirements to meet or exceed to achieve one of these levels: See pages 4 & 32 for mission trip opportunities & service ideas or call Bro. Paul at the Network for more suggestions. These pages are only a sample of all that’s available to you and your church.

Each church achieving one of these levels will be recognized in the newsletter and presented certificate of achievement at the Network Annual Meeting in Oct 2010 if completed by then or in the January 2011 Executive Board Meeting.

God has strategically located each of our churches in the areas they are for such a time as this. Will you follow GPS and train up and send out the church into the mission fields in 2010?

SPARTANBURG INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK

Homeless Statistics:

·        On any given day in Spartanburg County, 541 plus people are without shelter

·        Forty percent of those people are families

·        Thirty percent of those people are children

SPIHN is a major component of Spartanburg’s response to Family Homelessness. They focus on keeping families together by partnering with local churches that help provide temporary shelter and food while being offered support and hospitality services 24 hours-a-day/7 days-a-week at their Day Center Program. All of this assistance is aimed at moving families back to a point of Self-Sufficiency.

HOW DOES SPIHN WORK?

Each family is moved through a series of four stages:

1.      Entrance Interviews: All members of each family must be Drug Free, have No History of Violence, Be Medically and Emotionally Stable & be Willing to TRY!

2.      Day Center Program: Be involved in Intensive Case Management, Actively pursuing employment, working to find permanent or transitional housing and Improving everyday lifeskills. (*Showers are Available Here)

3.      Evening Program: Participate in a weekly rotation of approximately 13 host churches/congregations. These churches provide shelter and food for up to 14 guests. Volunteers stay overnight with families to ensure their safety and assist with evening activies for children. (*Support Churches are Needed also.)

4.      Self-Sufficiency: The goal is to have families self-sufficient after 3-4 months

SPIHN needs your TIME, TALENT and TREASURE to help meet the needs of these families currently living on the streets. If you and/or your church is interested in helping with this ministry, please contact Carolyn Linebarger at 597-0699. This is a perfect expression of how GPS can make a difference in the lives of those around us.

SAFE HOMES: RAPE CRISIS COALITION

Imagine living in fear, terror and real physical harm, with memories that leave lifelong scars.

EVANGELISM RESPONSE CENTER

As we look at the way society is changing all around us in the Twenty-First Century, it is easy to see that the number of people who are lost is ever-increasing. Every day more than 5,800 people in the United States die without a relationship with Jesus. If we are to have any chance at all of fulfilling the Great Commission, we must continually explore new ways to become a part of “God’s Plan for Sharing.” The Evangelism Response Center (ERC) is one of those ways to carry out GPS.

Have you ever felt a little guilty or ashamed about not sharing your faith more? Well, we all have, but what can we do about it in the midst of the busy lives we live? ERC is just one of the answers to that very question. ERC is a tool that can help you get in touch with people who are seeking God’s help and at a time that works better in the midst of your already busy schedule, right from the very comfort of your home-day or night.

             THIS COULD BE YOU!

                           WILL YOU ANSWER THE CALL?

Not only is ERC a great tool for personal evangelism, it is also a great tool for disciple-making. Making a decision to follow Jesus Christ is merely the first step of a lifelong journey in the process of knowing, loving and serving Him. ERC believes that the successful discipling of new believers cannot take place until they are assimilated into a local church. Therefore, they have established a network of local Southern Baptist churches all across North America, known as “Covenant Churches” that provide immediate follow up and encouragement for those who have made the decision to follow Christ in salvation. Once a person has made a significant spiritual decision, their contact information is sent to the nearest Covenant Church, usually within 8 miles or so if possible.

Would you prayerfully consider asking your church to become a “Covenant Church” in 2010 as a part of the GPS strategy ensuring every believer is sharing and every person is hearing and growing in the admonition of the Lord. You set your schedule and the length of time and number of days you’d like to be available and leave the rest to the Lord.

Who knows, ERC may inspire you to begin sharing your faith more actively throughout your day as the Lord grows your confidence in the area of witnessing and brings people into your path.

Read John 4:35-38 and ask God if He is leading you to be involved in GPS by getting involved in ERC in 2010. You will have ample opportunities to impact lives eternally by using this tool. Remember, faith come by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

You and/or your church can be involved in the following ways: By becoming a Covenant Church, Hosting a two-hour ERC Telephone Encourager Training and/or by becoming a Telephone Encourager. Please call Bro. Paul if you’re interested.

ADOPT A CAMPUS

In 2010, we are asking churches to partner with the Baptist Collegiate Ministry and impact our five campuses in Spartanburg County.

How Can You Partner with BCM to Impact These Campuses?

1.      Shepherding the Shepherds: As many of you may know already, students on each campus are meeting in about 25 small group settings and using the process of Storying to make disciples. This process is used around the world with the IMB to rapidly produce disciples. These student leaders, however, need someone who is passionate about disciple-making and willing to spend one hour a week to Shepherd them through this process as they do the same. If you are willing to help and to give a hour a week, please call Tracy or Suzanne for more details at 582-4609.

2.      Adopt a Student- Sometimes a student far from home doesn’t have the opportunity to get back to family as often as he or she would like. You can open up your home to have a student over for a cup of coffee and some conversation, a special meal, or simply to do a load of laundry. It means so much for them to have caregivers in their college town. If you’re interested contact the BCM.

3.      Move In Days- Be available to help carry luggage, boxes, etc. for a student making the transition from home to school again or for the first time. This is a great opportunity for you to meet and greet families as well as students and to offer a smile, word of encouragement and a helping hand.

4.      Provide a meal for students- Provide a meal for students as they gather to worship each week during the school year. This is a wonderful tool to bring out students and give them an opportunity for fellowship around the table before diving into the Word. All paper products and utensils are provided, so all you have to offer is a meal for 40-60 students. Contact Suzanne at 582-4609 to set a date to bring a meal.

Prayer: Above all else, pray for students, that their hearts and minds would be open to building relationships with Christ followers and that through these relationships, the Holy Spirit would be at work. Pray also for students who have already accepted Christ as Savior, would not loose heart in the stresses of student life. Prayerwalking a campus is a great way to be involved in the work of BCM also.

Will you follow “GPS” in 2010 and reach out and connect with students in your Jerusalem?

FEED THE COMMUNITY

Every year for the last 22 years churches, community organizations and individuals have joined together to ensure that the needy and hungry in Spartanburg County enjoy a hearty, home-cooked Thanksgiving Day meal.

In 2009, we served approximately 7,000 meals. In 2010, we expect to serve as many as 7,500 meals using multiple churches, businesses, the Soup Kitchen and help from Red Lobster, Bi-Lo, Salvation Army and other corporate sponsors. As you can see the Need continues to rise for various reasons as does the need for more volunteers, donations and prayers.

While so many of us will sit down with family and friends and enjoy a nice, hot meal on Thanksgiving Day, many others will go hungry this year without your help.

So How Can You Help in 2010?

·       We need your monetary donations: The cost is expected to be $25, 000 in 2010.

·       We need churches to donate 1300 home-made or store bought pies to offset costs.

·       We need you to volunteer at specific times throughout Thanksgiving week.

·       We need your help getting the word out to those in need who may still not know about this ministry, especially in the northern part of the county.

·       We need your prayers that God will be glorified in all we do to help others.

For more details on how you can start planning now to follow GPS on Thanksgiving Day, call Bro. Paul at the Network at 582-8330!

PRISON PACKETS

It’s time to collection Prison Packets again, which go to bless the prisoners in our South Carolina Prisons. In 2009, we collected more than 1300 packets. In 2010, our Network goal is expected to be 1400 packets. We need your help. God will use each of these packets to touch the lives of men and women in prison who need a special touch this year. Thanks to all our churches who worked to make this possible in the past! I am confident, however, we can work to get the word out this year and do even better in 2010. With each church taking part, the task of meeting our goal increases tremendously. Let’s all work together to do our part to assist the South Carolina Baptist Convention in gathering the 25,000 packets needed to make sure each prisoner is touched by the love of Christ through His people this Christmas season all across the state of South Carolina.

Many of the inmates have no family or friends that show any interest in them at all. Whatever the reason(s) they find themselves incarcerated at this time in their lives, they have many needs waiting to be met. We however, have a mandate to follow GPS and ensure that every person hears the gospel of Jesus Christ, regardless of the circumstances. We, as Christians, have the answer to their greatest need, which is Jesus and His forgiveness.

Below is the list of needed items. All packets are due at the Network by Nov. 24, 2010. *Note: This date has been moved up to give us time to review every packet to ensure correct items are included in each bag and to purchase the extra items needed. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions (582-8330). Last year’s packets were much more correct than previous years. Thanks for your continued attention to details! Workday for Prison Packets is Dec. 1, 2010

A TIME TO REMEMBER

Give the gift of love to people who are often forgotten

during the Christmas season:

1- Angel Tree-Each year the names of children whose parent(s) are either incarcerated or no longer in the home are hung on a Christmas tree. These children will have little or no Christmas gifts to open due to their family’s limited financial income. With your help, these children will not only be able to enjoy the thrill of opening a surprise gift, but also learn about the true meaning of Christmas as a result of your giving spirit. May GPS lead you to bring the Hope of Christ to a needy child and their family in 2010. If your church doesn’t have an Angel Tree, fear not. There are many ministries all around Spartanburg County with names of children in similar situations. For further assistance, call the Network office at 582-8330.

2- Military serviceman and their families- With so many of our family members and friends still serving around the world and unable to be home at Christmas, what a blessing to know people still remember the sacrifices they are making for each of us. Our soldiers would be thrilled to have something from home when they have to be away. Small gift packages, Christmas cards, pictures from home of family, events, etc. are just some of the treats you could send. And their families often have less money to spend on their own celebration while their main breadwinner is away. Contact Brenda Harris at the support group for military families located in the Upstate Family Resource Center for more information-(864) 461-2892.

3- American Cancer Society-The Road to Recovery program can still use your help getting people to and from life-saving treatments and regularly scheduled doctor’s appointments. They can also use your financial support for gas cards for those who have transportation, but may be short on money due to costly treatments and medications. ACS also has a variety of other ways for caring people like you to help in GPS. If you are interested in learning more about ACS and how you can give the gift that keeps on giving, please call Lang Hunt at 1-877-227-9398 or go to lang.hunt@cancer.org.

4- Take books and/or read to homebound individuals- Many of our homebound live alone and do not want to burden family members with their reading needs. A special program sponsored by the Spartanburg County Public Library called “Homebound Services” has been created to help meet that need. When a homebound person learns that there is a program in place that is strictly for them, their faces light up. To know that a volunteer will not only select the material, but will spend quality time with them reading or just taLking about what they have read or how there day is going, you would think the homebound recipient has received an early Christmas present. To be a “GPS” volunteer contact Evelyn Parks, Volunteer Coordinator, at (864) 596-3507 or Bro. Paul at the Network.

Please let us know how you used “GPS” to bless someone else during the Christmas season.

SERVANT EVANGELISM

Servant Evangelism (SE) is more than a method. SE touches the heart, breaks down barriers, builds bridges and brings opportunities to change the world, one small act of kindness at a time. It may mean trying something new and stepping out of your comfort zone. Go for it.

The Following are Merely Some Ideas, but is not an Exhaustive List:

  • Prayer Walk your community: Ask God to change lives & open hearts to the gospel
  • Prepare a meal for the participants of a local ministry or homebound person.
  • Conduct a weekly, monthly or quarterly worship service and/or crafts activity at a Nursing Home/Retirement Ctr/Assisted Living facility
  • Biggie Size someone’s meal at a Fast Food Restaurant.
  • Homeless Goodie Bags: Make some up, keep them in your car and “Share Them” as you see people on the streets or with signs saying “Will Work for Food.”
  • Offer to clean someone’s house or yard that’s elderly or unable to do it on their own.
  • Ask your waiter/waitress if you can pray for him/her about some specific need in their life. *Remember to tip well also so you won’t damage your witness.
  • Do something special for a SS teacher, school teacher or principal, whether you have children or not.
  • Be a Secret Pal to your Pastor and Staff throughout the year with small gifts or service.
  • Bake some cookies or a meal and treat your local fire Dept. or Police precinct in honor of their service.
  • On a rainy day, take an umbrella and go to your local grocery store and help people get their groceries to their cars or collect and return carts on any day for grocery stores.
  • Serve a meal at a Soup Kitchen/Homeless Shelter.
  • Have your children or youth clip coupons for single parents in your church/community.
  • Share your garden proceeds with the needy in your church/community.
  • Offer Free Gift Wrapping at a Mall or Department Store and share Jesus while they wait.
  • Set Up a Hot Chocolate/Coffee Booth at a Bus Station, store, etc. & Share about Jesus.
  • Help a College Student move into his/her dorm/apartment.
  • Read the Bible, Newspaper or letters for someone in the Nursing Home/Hospice House.
  • Volunteer to deliver books from the Library to a homebound person requesting them.
  • Collect Gloves and Socks for the Homeless or a ministry to the needy at Christmas.
  • Have your Acteens go to the Nursing Home and paint nails and brush hair for residents.
  • Get trained in Disaster Relief and help someone in a time of crisis and need.
  • Become a Telephone Encourager or a Covenant Church with the Evangelism Response Center of the North American Mission Board. (Call Bro. Paul for Details at 582-8330.)

       NOVA SCOTIA EXPERIENCE

If “GPS” is leading you this year to be a part of a cutting edge mission experience, then the NOVA SCOTIA EXPERIENCE is for you. The Canadian National Baptist Convention is teaming up with South Carolina Baptist to reach Nova Scotia with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The goal is to plant 54 churches by the year 2020.

WHY PLANT SO MANY CHURCHES IN ONE PLACE?

Nova Scotia is a province of slightly over one million people. While there are several churches all across Nova Scotia, most either have no evangelical outreach strategy or minimal to say the least and only four are Southern Baptist Churches. Among Canada’s 31 million people, only 7% are thought to be evangelical Christians saved by grace through Christ Jesus. Thirteen of the twenty-five major cities in Canada have no evangelical church presence at all. The four Southern Baptist churches are small, but striving to reach Nova Scotia with the gospel and need our help.

HOW CAN YOU TAKE PART IN THE NOVA SCOTIA EXPERIENCE?

1.       Commit to praying for Canada and the South Carolina teams that will join them in their quest to plant 54 churches by the year 2020.

2.       Commit to praying about becoming a Team Leader and leading a team to experience Nova Scotia.

3.       Commit to being a Team Member and experience Nova Scotia personally.

4.       Commit to return and share with others your experience and the need that still exist and the work to be done.

5.       Commit to making a financial contribution so someone else can go and serve if you are unable to go.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MISSION REQUESTS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOLUNTEERS?

1.      College Student Ministry: College students are needed to work with missionaries reaching out to the six campuses to locate persons of peace and start Bible studies. Team Leaders also Needed!

a.     College Students are also needed to work with a new church plant in the area of children and youth and be a catalyst for establishing a youth ministry in the community.

b.     These teams of students will work through SCBC and the Current Ministry of the North American Mission Board. Assistance with funding and preparation is available.

2.      Backyard Bible Teams: Teams will conduct BYBC once or twice per day Monday-Friday in different communities. Optimal team size is 8-10. Dates are flexible during July and August. School meets through June.

3.      Evangelism: Door-to-Door Visitation/Street Witnessing/Tract Distribution: Teams would visit and meet prospects, invite them to Grace Community Church. Team leader also Needed. *Call me for more info.

4.      Summer Missionary or Couple: There is a GREAT NEED for an individual or couple to come for three months or longer to oversee the teams and outreach activities in all regions of Nova Scotia.

*Pray about letting “GPS” lead you to encounter the NOVA SCOTIA EXPERIENCE IN 2010.

Pray for student leaders as they begin small group Bible studies on the campuses.   With 12,000 college students at the 5 campuses in Spartanburg, there is a tremendous mission field right here at home!    We need individuals or families to "adopt" a college student -- build a relationship with them, invite them to your home for a meal -- just interact with them!  Many, especially International students, may never be invited into an American home while at college.  What a missed opportunity to share the Gospel with a student that may go back to their home country as a new believer and missionary to their own people.
We are now located in the Baptist Network Building on Cummings Street.  To see find out what is happening visit our web site or call the Baptist Collegiate Ministry office at 582-4609. God is doing amazing things in the lives of college students.  Join Him!
