Thursday, May 3, 2012

11:45am - 1pm

The Beacon

(rain location: Southside Baptist Church)

Join us to pray for our national, state and local leaders, as well as local ministries, churches, schools and our families.

Please Note: The Network office will be closed from 11:30 to 1:30pm on this day to allow our staff to take part in this observance.

From theDirector

Thank you SO much for the sabbatical. It was approved in my tenth year as your DOM, but deferred until after the Ethnic Ministries Summit. It ended April 21. I attended our spring Executive Team meeting on April 24, and am on sabbatical until our fall Executive Team meeting September 18. Paul McKee was approved as Acting DOM in my absence. He and our great staff will assure that our Network missions and ministries continue in my absence, and that the needs from our churches are met. One regret is that the 22-weeks away keeps me from attending all of our churches this year, as I did in each of my first eleven years. In the 29 weeks of this Network year I was here, I attended 55 of our 93 churches, plus another which has applied and our new messianic synagogue. I am touring the country to visit associations/key churches/ethnic ministries/city reaching movements, with some sightseeing and vacation interspersed. The first two weeks out, I made it to 3 of the 8 states I had not visited, after a couple days at Southeastern Seminary, where I had never been.

I ended April with a Sunday service and ministry fair at Brooklyn Tabernacle. I’ll start May with their Tuesday evening prayer meeting (read about this in Jim Cymbala’s book), spend a staff meeting day at Emmanuel Gospel Center (hosted the Boston summit), and tour the Roger Williams (Baptist founder in the USA) historical sites in Rhode Island. Coming back through Washington, I’ll attend Capitol Hill Baptist Church, pastored by Mark Dever. I had already seen every MLB team play at home, so this trip includes baseball games at the 2 new parks in NYC & one in DC. I saw in Virginia my church visitation partner from 1970-71, the year I was trained as a soul-winner. I get home for the Summit wrap-up meeting & fellowship May 10, the state ethnic ministries meeting May 11-12, and Mother’s Day with Nancy and her Mother. May 14-19 is FL (new baseball park Miami & friend on Daytona team). Back here for Evelyn Henderson’s 50th anniversary in ethnic ministry May 20, then Nancy & I drive through MW/NW & West, see the Grand Canyon & our TX grandchildren. Will be in New Orleans to speak at the national DOM conference and attend the S. Baptist Convention, to GA for HS class reunion, and back to Spartanburg by June 28.

Besides the sabbatical, I also thank the churches and individuals who helped in so many different ways with the Ethnic Ministries Summit. Our great Network staff each kept doing a great job with their regular tasks while giving increasing time on the Summit, the closer it got. Were it not for them, I could not have served as the Summit administrator, nor be away from here on sabbatical. So thanks to all of you and special thanks to our staff Paul/Julie/Jayne/Sherri and our Hispanic ministry consultant, Doug Jett.

DISCOVER HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS IN 2012!

MISSION TRIP PRAISE REPORT:

On March 23-24, Boiling Springs FBC and Crosspointe Community Fellowship Churches partnered together for our 2nd Annual pre-Easter event in Bluefield, VA. We conducted a community-wide block party, an Easter egg hunt and a worship service including a choir/praise band concert. As a result of this effort and in spite of storms going on all around us the night before and all morning, we saw 2100 people attend this event and 48 salvations. We also held a launch service for a new church plant in Raven, VA where we saw 2 more salvations. Although Satan reared his ugly head, God prevailed once again and to Him all the glory is deserved and given. A special thanks to the many churches here in Spartanburg who collected, stuffed and donated eggs. I will be sending a video to every church who took part in this event. Thanks to all the other volunteers who served in this effort as well. If you would like to help in 2013, please begin buying eggs now when they go on sale.

MAY’S EMPHASES: “Evelyn Henderson Mission Offering” and “Baby Bottle Campaign”

Evelyn Henderson Mission Offering: This year’s offering goes to help support a variety of ministries throughout Spartanburg County. Please prayerfully consider giving to this offering. Your assistance can help spread the gospel to those in need of hearing it. For a list of ministries, you can go to www.spartanburgcountybaptistnetwork.org.

*Migrant/Health Kits: – Kits are due at Boiling Springs FBC May 31, 2012. Call 578-0313 for more details.

Carolina Pregnancy Center: What a special opportunity to honor your mother during the month of May by filling a Baby Bottle with loose change and donating it to the CPC to help them serve other mothers learning new skills as a struggling mom, receive Godly council on alternatives to abortion, and most importantly, share Christ with them. This campaign accounts for almost half of the CPC’s yearly operating budget. Please help as the Lord leads you or your church.

JUNE’S EMPHASES: “Greater Spartanburg Ministries” and “Network Literature Ministry”

GSM:A non-profit ministry that serves people in times of crisis throughout the entire county. They depend on your donations both monetarily and in kind. You can look at the 2012 Mission booklet under the month of June, go to www.greatersm.org or call 585-9371 to find out how you can help with specific needs and volunteer opportunities. Network

Literature Ministry (formerly known as Luke 19:10): Rather than throwing perfectly good used and new literature away, please collect and deliver it to the Network. At least twice a year, we will load and transport to a ministry in Decatur, Alabama where it will be shipped to over 21 countries around the world. Lives are being changed for eternity through the gift of God’s Word and other Christian literature. If you would like to also contribute to the cost of transportation and shipping, please make checks payable to SCBN. For more info on sharing God’s love, call the Network.

*Global and Local Opportunities: Please pray for the six teams serving in Nova Scotia, Canada this year as well as the one returning to Guatemala. We would love to plug you in to a trip this year or in the future. Call me at 641-5140 for more details. Passports are required for all trips outside the USA. Please prepare by getting one now.

*Local Construction Opportunities: Many of you have expressed an interest in more construction opportunities locally. Well, I now have about a half dozen projects needing volunteers now and throughout the summer, like New Life Deliverance in the Whitney area, Church Builders in Spartanburg, New Life Christian Fellowship in Spartanburg, Cowboy Church in the Pacolet area and more. If you are willing to help serve with one of these projects and others, please call me ASAP so we can coordinate work days.

Help us “PAY IT FORWARD” by joining forces to do together what we cannot do alone!

Ministry Update - BAPTIST COLLEGIATE MINISTRY

Suzanne Bachelor, Director

I am very blessed to serve with our student leaders on our local college campuses and especially because of all of our local churches and the support that you give through prayer, and the giving of your time, energy, talents, compassion, and money towards outreach and evangelism for this generation. Below is a sweet letter from Yam. Yam is a student leader with BCM, a junior at Converse College, and active at Kaleidoscope. She wants to express thanks especially for the opportunity to travel with over 30 of our local college students to our state collegiate conference, Converge. Your giving made this possible.

Dear Network Pastors and Churches,

I’m happy to report to you of my experience at Converge, and personally thank you for your scholarships and prayersfor us college students. I had shared with some of you at the executive team meeting in January that going to Converge would help me make informed choices in our Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM). My view was confirmed and expanded. God used this conference to deepen my understanding of His grace and the necessity of Christ in our lives each day. I was personally convicted to respond properly to God by worshipping Him for who He is rather than for the blessings I want from Him. I have returned to Converse College as a student who can make better choices in BCM not just due to the knowledge that I gained but because the Lord is shaping my vision and heart. So, thanks be to God for loving us and continuously molding us, and thanks to you all for your support and prayers for BCM!

~ Yam Watthanasuk

Finally, I’d like to ask you to continue to pray for Yam as she will serve this summer as a BCM missionary to Connie Maxwell Children’s Home. She is one of several Spartanburg students who will serve on mission this summer. Many of our students are still trusting God to provide the financial support they need to fulfill their mission assignments in the Philippines; Costa Rica; Ethiopia; and Cleveland, OH. Please support these students as they go through your prayers and also as the Lord directs through giving. If you’d like to send a contribution, you may make a check out to Spartanburg BCM and on the “for” line put “summer missions.” Please mail to Spartanburg BCM, 495 Tenosha Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303. We will be happy to provide a receipt for your records. Thanks so much for caring.

=========== Sheri’s Corner

“You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” – Leviticus 19:34

Having lived in a foreign country, I am familiar with the emotions that accompany being away from home; homesickness, isolation, and loneliness. Some of the things we missed most about home were comfort food and family! College campuses in Spartanburg County host students from all over the world. Wofford College alone hosts students from 19 different countries. These international students miss familiar food, their heart language, and they miss their families. To show the students the love of Christ we try to have an event once a month to highlight their country or a holiday. In March we invited international students to a Pre-Easter Party. Our country focus that night was Rwanda. We ate Rwandan food, dyed and hunted Easter eggs, then shared the Gospel through Resurrection eggs and the Biblical Easter Story. Students from seven countries were present.

Many of these students have never been away from their families, many have never heard the Gospel of Christ and most have never seen the inside of an American home. You and your church can minister in many ways to our international guests by building relationships with them, hosting special events or hosting an international student during the school year. The school year will end soon but it is not too early to consider hosting an international student in the fall or assisting in other ways. There are so many ways to minister to international students. Contact me at norris@pobox.com for how you can reach the sojourner in our community.
