NETWORKING CHURCHES TOGETHER, IN WHAT WE CAN’T DO ALONE.

September/October 2010

Network Annual Meeting Moves to Anderson Mill Road

Our 2010 annual meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, October 26th. It had previously been announced for Sonrise Baptist Church, but they were delayed getting into their new building, which still needs some work. So, they requested to switch years with the church next on the list. We like to meet in our churches with new auditoriums, so we had planned to have our 2010-11 meetings at Bethlehem, Sonrise, and Anderson Mill Road. This order would have retained the geographic rotation we prefer, but we appreciate Anderson Mill accommodating us this year. Their address is 4455 Anderson Mill Road, Moore 29369, for those who GPS. Most others will use I-26,

take exit #22 onto Hwy. 296. Turn toward Reidville, go about a mile to the traffic light at Papa John’s Pizza and turn left onto Anderson Mill Road. The church is about a mile on the left.

Hank Williams, pastor of Boiling Springs First, will preach the annual sermon. Anderson Mill Road will provide the music. The Lifetime Achievement Award will go to Jerry Meeks, who retired this year after eight years as our Hispanic Missionary, following fifteen years with International Mission Board. We will approve our 2010-11 budget and elect our

new officers, including Ricky Eason as moderator and Billy Norris as vice-moderator. We anticipate one new church into membership, Riding for Jesus Cowboy Church, and approving Constitution and Bylaws amendments which were introduced in writing at the 2009 annual meeting, and have been approved by the Executive Team. A summary of the amendments is inside this newsletter (page 5). No controversial business is anticipated, so all who attend from our members churches may register as messengers.

For free childcare for ages 2 & under, email Jill@amrbc.org or call the church at 208-2087 in advance.

UPSTATE SUNDAY HIGH ATTENDANCE DAY

Simultaneous High Attendance Day

NOVEMBER 7, 2010

“More Than Ever Before”

High attendance days have been part of Sunday School over the years. In the past, the SBC set a high attendance day and goal. In recent years, churches have been focused on their unique mission field and less emphasis has been given to working toward a goal with other churches. This year Carlton Berry, the Network’s SS Leader, invites all the churches that participate in our 2nd Annual Upstate Sunday School Training event August 28th, to join together in a Simultaneous Sunday High Attendance Day. This is the day for promoting evangelism through the Sunday School (or whatever your church calls its Sunday morning Bible study groups). We are asking our churches to join us in a major campaign for the spiritual enrichment of the people throughout our communities. If you would like your church to participate, please inform us by October 12th of your attendance goal, and by November 9th of your actual attendance.

From theDirector - Jim Goodroe

If time flies when you are having fun, then a decade dashes when you are being fulfilled! Thanks for calling me 10-17-00 to be your Director of Missions. Much has changed in and for the Network these ten years, but not my joy in this job, which is now the longest job I’ve ever held. For the tenth straight year, I attended every Network church at least once. Return visits dropped to eighteen churches, as I attended Kaleidoscope on Sunday nights except for special events like ordination services. I continue to enjoy being in our churches, experiencing their services, and interacting with our people.

My major outside responsibility has changed each year. This year I helped train and follow-up the second cycle of DOMs in SC using NAMB’s “Thrive” process for church revitalization, after being in the first year group, trained by NAMB. Paul McKee is leading our second cycle of “Thrive” pastors here; he pastored in TN before moving here. My “outside” responsibility next year is a result of the emphasis on reaching internationals, which we adopted for our second “quarter century.” I’ll be coordinating the next North American ethnic ministry Summit. It will be here April 19th-21st, 2012, but we are already planning it, including bringing some renowned speakers here. The end goal of a Summit is not a big event, but an ongoing ethnic ministry network in the region. We will jumpstart this on September 25th with the organizational meeting of the Upstate Ethnic Ministry Network. Several members of Ethnic America Network will be here to help that day, and staying over to speak in Sunday morning services September 26th. If you may be interested in having one, I can tell you who is coming, from what organizations or ethnicities.

This bi-monthly newsletter links the last month of our 2009/10 year, and the first for 2010/11. With the ripple effects of the lingering recession, our new budget has major cuts. Most of them were actually implemented last November, so the main change you will notice is the retirement of Jerry Meeks as Hispanic missionary, a position which will remain vacant for the forseeable future.

A wild card in our finances is “Great Commission Resurgence,” which aims to get more Cooperative Program money to regions beyond the Bible belt. States like ours could lose outside funding for positions like Paul McKee’s (almost half his compensation package). So we hope to add some money to our budget each year so that when this happens, we could make up the difference locally. Where God guides He provides, so pray for us as we seek to prioritize and strategize.

News Around the Network

Ministry Update

BAPTIST COLLEGIATE MINISTRY

Tracy Turner

BCM

I know usually we think of beginnings in January, but for college students this time of year is a great time for beginnings. That is especially true for the Spartanburg BCM. We are beginning ministry with a focus on connecting freshmen to Christ this fall at our new location on Tenosha Drive near the USC Upstate campus. BCM’s emphasis continues to be to create relational environments that produce Biblical disciples that multiply others. We need to continue to partner with our local churches in order to do this. I am continually grateful for Dr. Goodroe and the Baptist Network Staff. For the last year and a half they have allowed us to use office space at the Network office. The folks at the Network have shown such acts of kindness to us from a Kingdom perspective. We want folks from our local churches to know where we are and to join us in a prayer movement for college students all over Spartanburg and our nation this fall.

Dr. Goodroe and the leaders of the Pastor’s Conference have agreed to move the September 14th Pastor’s Luncheon to our new location just for the month of September (495 Tenosha Dr.). At the Pastor’s luncheon folks will be able to tour both of our facilities for college ministry. We will also have available maps of each of the five college campuses encouraging folks in churches to prayer walk one of these campuses during the month from September until October 8th. Even if folks are not able to prayer walk, we encourage others to “prayer ride” the campus in your car. We believe God responds to the cries of His people. On October 10th we will have a joint worship service called Awaken for all area college students and young adults to celebrate answered prayer and changed lives.

Claudia’s Corner

As much as we enjoyed summer, it had to come to an end and now it’s time for school again. With every beginning of a school year we have several international students coming in town for the first time. At Wofford College we have three new internationals arriving, two young men from Rwanda and one young lady from China. I want to thank the families that have already committed to becoming host families for these students, guiding them and helping them adjust in their new culture. Please be praying for Calixte Nahimana and Richard Mugabe, arriving from Rwanda this week. Please also pray for Yaqian Li arriving from China in September. These three are the new students who will experience American culture and school for the first time. Pray that they will experience the love of Christ in the time they are here, and that their adjustment to the new place will be smooth and safe. Pray also for returning students, specifically three Rwandan students coming back to school, and one from Moldova, that their travel will be safe and their transition smooth. Kaleidoscope Multi-Ethnic Fellowship invites you to worship with us on Sunday nights at 6 p.m. at the Baptist Network building. We have had several international speakers come and worship with us this summer and that is always encouraging, a great reminder that we are one of the many nations God placed on this earth to proclaim His name. Continue to pray for our worship services, that God will bring more internationals to the knowledge of Christ.

Claudia High - Coordinator of Ministries with Internationals

Several amendments to the Network “Constitution & By-Laws” were introduced in writing at our annual meeting 10-27-09, to be voted on at our annual meeting 10-26-10. All were submitted & recommended by our Constitution & By-Laws Team, and discussed and approved by our Executive Team. Word-for-word copies of the amendments themselves and the revised wordings of those sections were distributed at the 2009 annual meeting & the Executive Team meetings, and will be in the agenda packet for 2010 annual meeting. The gist of the changes is:

1) If no controversial business is anticipated at annual meeting, Network may announce that all in attendance from Network churches may register as messengers.

2) Program Team eliminated. They planned the Spring semi-annual meeting, which has been eliminated. Annual meeting preacher is recommended by Place & Preacher Team, and the mandatory agenda items in the annual meeting left little discretionary time to be planned by the Program Team.

3) Clarify the application process for churches seeking Network membership: Church Petitions Team receives written request at least 30 days before Sept. meeting of Executive Team, which will discuss & vote on report of Petitions Team. Petitioning churches may be voted on separately at Executive Team, but as a group in Annual Meeting.

4) Petitions Team given an additional option for churches whose requests it believes would be rejected by Network or cause serious disunity or dissension. Church may be encouraged to withdraw its formal membership request, eliminating the report or vote at Executive Team.

5) All churches joining Network will have a year of watchcare, supervised by Fellowship & Mutual Care Team, which will assign a mentor pastor for each watchcare pastor.

6) Watchcare completion will require: complete ACP; submit Constitution & By-Laws, leadership roster, etc.; begin or continue CP & Network missions giving, at appropriate levels.

7) Watchcare may be waived for a group of churches transferring from another association.

8) Inactive status added & clarified for member churches failing for 2 consecutive years to report ACP or make financial contribution to Network missions.

9) Network membership track added for Non-Traditional churches; Church Petitions Team has 2 tracks, with a co-chair plus 2 members for each track.

10) Until a church plant joins the Network itself, its relevant stats may be reported through the planting church, per ACP guidelines.
