Pacolet First History

History of

First Baptist Church of Pacolet

Pacolet, S.C.

Pacolet First Baptist Church, originally called Pleasant Grove, was begun in 1870 as a mission of the Bethesda Baptist Church.  Two acres of land had been previously contributed to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by Elijah P. Brown.  The property on which the first building was erected was located six-tenths of a mile west of the present church and two-tenths of a mile north on the left hand side of Brown Mill or Old Quarry Road.

In May, 1871 the church called Rev. John S. Ezell as pastor.  During the pastorate of Rev. G.S. Anderson in 1879, Pleasant Grove Church was moved to Pacolet Station, its present location, and a new building erected.

In 1921, the Pacolet First Church building was completely renovated.  Rev. Lawrence Pruitt was called as its first full time pastor in 1948.  The church building was again renovated during his ministry.  In 1969, the name of the church was changed to First Baptist Church of Pacolet.

On November 16, 1975, the church voted to build a new auditorium and more classrooms on the site of the present building. .The first worship service was held in the new church building June 26, 1977.

A new fellowship building was added in the fall of 1999.

As the present time, Dr. Troy Gregg is serving as our Transitional Pastor.  The church is seeking to find a new Pastor.

Through the ministry of our deacons:  Paul Blackwell, chairman; Ben Baker, Shannon Gault, Carroll Rhinehart, and Wayne White; along with our Music leaders – Carl Rogers, Mary Rogers, and Linda Pack; our Secretary, Shirley Brackins, Sunday School Teachers and our congregation; we strive to be a very close and loving church family we want the Lord’s will to be done in our church.  We want to grow spiritually and in number.

With the Lord’s help, wisdom and leadership we strive to do whatever he has for us to do for Him and his church.
